Can cats eat peppers?

A: It is very common for cats to eat fresh or dried peppers. In fact, it’s quite common for cats to eat hot peppers of all kinds (cayenne pepper is especially popular). Cats are also well-known to eat all kinds of “green” veggies and, although the list of avlable foods may be somewhat limited, many types of fresh veggies and fruits are frly safe for cats to eat. Cats tend to enjoy the flavor of the food, and it’s the heat that puts cats off.

Can cats eat tomatoes?

A: Like a lot of people, my cats enjoy tomato juice. This juice seems to satisfy their desire to taste something “pungent” but the juice is really not a great option as a tomato substitute. If you give them the juice to drink, the seeds will irritate the gums and they will have trouble breathing. In fact, I just checked our web site, and it has a warning about kids sharing beverages like tomato juice with kittens. (You might want to keep kids from the same room for a few minutes while the juice is on the stove and/or while you are eating.) You might also think about getting your cats used to pln water with a squirt of lemon juice or a drop of food-grade essential oil of lemon. It may be an acquired taste.

Can cats eat avocado?

A: I know cats have been known to snack on avocados, especially if they are canned. However, they do prefer fresh avocados to the ones in the can. The avocado industry has learned to can these avocados without problems, but you do need to wash the fruit. Some people will cut off a large slice, place it in a sealed contner, refrigerate it for 24 hours and then remove it from the fridge and serve it. Be sure to watch the can as it opens and that your cats have a safe area to do their business while you have food on the stove. I know that my husband likes to put the cooked leftovers in a closed contner, then place the contner on the floor for a few days. I can tell he will eat the extra at one time, and I don’t really mind.

Have you ever used a water fountn for your pets?

A: Most cat water fountns are not safe for them to drink from. There are a couple of places that have tested them and found that they do not contn the level of calcium and minerals that cats need in their water. However, if you want to test a particular fountn, you can just put one scoop of instant dry food into a cup of pln water in the fountn and see how they react. If they drink it all up and no problem, then they should be safe. If they do have any problems, you may want to buy a larger fountn for your cat. Some fountns even have filters that can be removed and cleaned.

I've really been enjoying The Cat Blog book by the photographer and blog creator Michelle Gaver. I'll let you know when I finish reading it. I have another one on the way. A few of the pages are missing, so I'll add them once I have the book and have had a chance to look at
