Should i force feed my dying cat with a bottle?

We are taking our 13-year-old cat to the vet for the 2nd time to hopefully find a cure for his weight loss and poor health. He has been hospitalized and in the hospital a number of times due to severe depression (caused by being sick for so long) and having to deal with the pain of arthritis and having 2 knees replaced. I know that this is a very personal thing and all that but I really think that if there was a cure available for this illness that it would help him immensely.

In fact, many people have told me that if their cats had this disease (cancer) they would force feed them the cat food (it has the right combination of vitamins and amino acids). But I don't want to do that for my cat if there is a cure, should I?

When we tried to feed him with his special formula he spat it out and was very upset and aggressive. I didn't want him to be aggressive so I left it there for the next 3 days. When I came back home he was sick in the morning, then fine in the afternoon but that night he was sick again.

I really don't want to force feed him and I know this is probably a stupid thing to ask you (as some of you can't understand my situation and may want to tell me to do that), but please help me understand what would be the best thing to do for my cat.

Thanks!

I have to apologize that you are having to go through this with your cat and then I ask you, is he in pain when you give him that formula? Can you tell?

I know that is so very difficult to hear... But how is your family handling the situation? I imagine they are all heartbroken and having to deal with this.

If he is in pain, that could explain his reaction to you trying to give him the special food. This is common with sick, painful cats and we do see them bite. Maybe they have had too much and it is a safety issue for them. When he is eating and then gets sick he has likely had too much already.

As far as leaving it there and hoping it will go away, I cannot imagine doing that to any pet. My vet has recommended I give him the special food but I also want to try another brand of the same brand first just in case. I want to be prepared and I am afraid that if I force feed him he will eat it. That is why I am asking for help.

How about if you try a small amount of the brand he likes and then increase as he eats? You can start with a few drops, then increase until you have about the same as the bottle you were trying to feed him with. I don't know your cat, but it sounds like he would eat about half of what you put in there.

I think the other idea I posted might be a good one. Have a vet check him out and also offer his other brand to him and see if that helps with his appetite. There is no way for you to know how he will react to it, though, so you have to do it and find out.

Is there something that I need to do after I feed the food to give him a good reaction? I am nervous to try it at first because I want to make sure he is ok before I give it to him. I know there is no guarantee that he will not have an allergic reaction.

If you don't want to use that brand of food, and the other brand was the problem, don't start the food with that food. Start with a small amount, say just a few drops, and if it doesn't seem to work, you know to stop feeding that. Also, there is no guarantee that it won't work either - maybe he doesn't have an allergic reaction and eats half of what you feed him, maybe it won't have a bad reaction for you either.

It is worth a try.

The only thing that worries me is the reaction he might have if he does react. I am not sure what a reaction to that might be.

He has had a rash for a week. His breathing is bad and I am worried about that.

When I put his food in he starts to whine like a little boy. He is not jumping, he just looks sad.

I did not know if this is the same way that a dog would react, but I am concerned about him.

I only have a small bottle of the food (I used up the large one when I first started trying it, but it was not helping. He had no appetite for it.)

He started to look better yesterday and I don't know if he ate or not.

The vet does not think the rash is bad. His breathing is only from some of the dry food he eats.

I am trying to keep the food down as much as I can.

I am feeding a lot of it, more than what I usually feed him. I am trying to see if it helps. I think it will help, as I keep all of his food away from his ears and the side of his face.

I have tried to keep his food in a different part of the house so he does not have to go too far.

I have never had a dog get this bad before. I am trying to help him. I am keeping him with me and it is hard to do because I work and I can't take him to my mom's.

It is also hard to eat because I don't have much time to eat.

I want to keep trying, but I am running out of time.

Maybe my vet doesn't think it is so bad. I am still looking for answers. I really want to keep him with me as long as I can.

I love him so much and I want to make sure he gets better. I don't know if he will.

I know he is sick, but I am not ready to say goodbye.

I want to keep him here as long as I can, if possible.

I have been feeling a lot of grief as I try to make sense of it all. I think I am feeling more grief now because I know that it is all up to me to make sure he is well again. I have to make sure he is okay, for him, for me, and for his parents.

There is only so much I can do.

The food is not making it any better. I wish it did.

I know my vet will help, but I don't know how.

I am looking for a way to make him feel better. I feel like I am running out of time, and I don't have anything to look forward to. I am really sad.

I wish I could save him.

I am feeling a lot of guilt.

I don't want to be doing this to him.

I feel like he is in so much pain, and I am not doing anything to help him.

It is like I feel like he is on his own.

I really want to help him.

I am still just trying to make sense of everything that is happening. I think I am feeling a lot of things right now. It is difficult. I don't know what to do.

I don't know what to do.

I don't know what to do.

I don't know what to do.

I know my vet is doing everything he can for him.

I want to help
