Anyone have any ideas on making a good outdoor dog run?

Ideas?

I currently have a large fenced area and a small area off to the side that's enclosed and fenced as well.

If I ever have to go away for a week or longer, I'm going to need to make sure my little guys have some time outdoors. We go to the same dog club, but they don't let our dogs in the off leash area.

I don't know if I want to purchase a chain link fence, or just leave the enclosed area as it is, but I think the enclosed area would be best for any type of aggressive breed. I'd like to put some type of play area in that enclosed area.

I am in the process of building my first dog house for the new puppy I am getting. I would like to put this puppy out on her own. So if I build a separate dog house for her, do you think I should put her in that enclosure at the same time I put my other dogs in?

Do you have any ideas or suggestions of any other things I could consider for an outdoor run for my dog.

What size do you think a dog that is 12lbs would need? (I think my little guy is 9lbs at the moment) I'd like to keep them both in the enclosed area with the puppy. I just need to figure out how to make an area that they can be contained in. I'm going to try to find some ideas on here before I purchase anything.

The area I currently have is enclosed and fenced. I think I might need to do the dog house for my puppy, but do you think I should put her in the fenced area at the same time I put the other dogs in?

The enclosed area is what I am looking for, I just need to figure out how to keep them from getting out.

How much room do you need?

I'd just leave them out on their own...that's what you are getting a doggie house for. The run will be for the "other" dog.

My advice would be to build a small chain link fence. You can make it high or low, depending on how much of a fence you want to make. My fence is 16' high. When I get done putting it up, I am going to add an outside doggie door in the back and a small gate in the front for them to go outside if they choose. If they decide to go outside, it will be a "safe" place to do so. I can't remember where I read it, but they have a tendency to do the same thing over and over again until they figure it out. The first place they go out will be my outside kitchen window. They figure out the back door, they find the back fence, and they come through the fence and find a nice place to lie and get some sun. (They always have my back door open and a dog bed in the window.) I can leave the front gate open for them, but I try not to because I don't want them to be "out there" and not be home.

I am getting a dog house for my puppy and then I am building a small fence.

I agree with the rest of the members, leave the puppies alone and let them go outside if they want.

For the enclosed area, you need something that will keep them out if they get too close to the fence, but is easy to let them back in.

When I was getting my own dogs, I found the biggest problems were always when they wanted to go out and you didn't know if they were going to come back. If you are getting a fence, I would suggest something that is easy to put up and take down. The other thing I would recommend is a puppy door. They can get out, but they can get back in without having to open the door.

We have 2 dogs and a cat, but I would not have more than 2 dogs. I found the two dog household worked out the best
